A man's entry into the clothing industry was driven by ideas and strong motivation. Presumably, he himself never imagined back then that he would one day become the creator of a fashion empire and a multi-billionaire.

Amancio Ortaga, a Spaniard, was born in 1936 in Busdongo de Arbás, Spain. He grew up in modest circumstances. He left school to work in a clothing store to support his family.

In 1963, Ortaga opened his first shop. It was a small business where his brother, sister-in-law, and then-wife helped out. His wife's skill as a seamstress proved to be a valuable asset. They created and sold evening gowns. These insights into the fashion industry sparked Amancio Ortaga's ambition. He wanted to outdo the competition. He believed that trendy fashion wasn't being produced and distributed quickly enough. This was his initial approach and realization.

Known, small sewing circles in his circle support his vision. Ortega has become a quality fanatic. He can identify the best fabric samples from among numerous options, grasp current trends, and produce his own version with high-quality features. His goal was to get the goods to market quickly and at affordable prices. He wanted to avoid seasonal trading and lengthy pre-orders. Ortega never felt targeted by accusations of plagiarism or claims that he simply copied fashion.

Over the decades, Amancio Ortaga created more than 6,000 retail outlets in over 80 countries, primarily selling his own private label brands. These include brands such as Zara, Massimo Dutti, Pull & Bear, and Bershka. He also developed a global distribution and logistics network. He first conquered the Spanish market, then expanded throughout Europe, followed by global market penetration.

Following his success in the textile industry and his conglomerate Inditex, he also ventured into real estate and finance, as well as investments in the automotive trade. The world-renowned Forbes magazine estimates Armanico Ortaga's net worth at over $140 billion in 2026. Ortaga is known for his rejection of power plays. He maintained close ties and a strong connection with his employees.
